Common Orthodontic Problems
Orthodontic issues can affect more than just the appearance of your smile. At Nudera Orthodontics Group, Dr. James Nudera and Dr. Robert Nudera diagnose and treat a wide range of orthodontic problems to improve both function and aesthetics. Identifying these issues early allows for more effective and efficient treatment.
What Are Common Orthodontic Problems?
Orthodontic problems, also known as malocclusions, occur when teeth or jaws are misaligned. These issues can affect how your teeth fit together, how you chew, speak, and even how you clean your teeth.
Some problems develop over time, while others are influenced by genetics, habits, or growth patterns.
Upper Front Teeth Protrusion
This condition occurs when the upper front teeth extend too far forward or the lower teeth sit too far back. It can affect both the appearance and function of your bite. Protruding teeth are also more vulnerable to injury, especially during sports or accidental falls.
Overbite
An overbite occurs when the upper front teeth excessively overlap the lower front teeth. In more severe cases, the lower teeth may contact the roof of the mouth, leading to discomfort. Overbites can also place added pressure on the teeth, contributing to long-term wear.
Crossbite
A crossbite happens when the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth rather than outside. This misalignment can lead to uneven tooth wear, gum issues, and improper jaw alignment. If left untreated, it may also affect jaw growth and overall bite function over time.
Openbite
An open bite occurs when the upper and lower front teeth do not touch when the mouth is closed. This can make chewing less efficient and may affect speech. It is often linked to habits like thumb sucking or tongue thrusting during early development.
Crowding
Crowding occurs when there is not enough space in the mouth for teeth to align properly. This can cause teeth to overlap or rotate, making them harder to clean. As a result, crowding may increase the risk of cavities, gum disease, and other oral health concerns.
Spacing
Spacing issues occur when there are gaps between teeth, often due to missing teeth or differences in tooth size. While sometimes cosmetic, these gaps can affect bite function. Larger spaces may also cause surrounding teeth to shift out of proper alignment over time.
Underbite
An underbite occurs when the lower front teeth sit in front of the upper front teeth due to jaw misalignment. This can impact chewing, speaking, and facial balance. In more severe cases, it may lead to jaw discomfort and difficulty with normal bite function.
