Orthodontic Retainers
Keeping your smile straight doesn’t end when your braces or Invisalign treatment is complete. Retainers play a vital role in maintaining your results long term. At Nudera Orthodontics Group, Dr. James Nudera and Dr. Robert Nudera will guide you through wearing and caring for your retainers so your smile stays beautifully aligned for life.
Why Are Retainers So Important?
After orthodontic treatment, the bone and soft tissues around your teeth need time to stabilize. Without proper retention, teeth can gradually shift back toward their original positions.
Wearing your retainers as instructed helps:
- Maintain your new smile
- Prevent relapse
- Protect your time and investment in treatment
Types of Orthodontic Retainers
Removable Retainers
Because teeth can continue to move throughout life, we recommend that individuals who have undergone orthodontic therapy should wear retainers indefinitely. A patient should wear retainers as much as possible for one year following the removal of braces. After approximately one year, the patient can wear the orthodontic retainer just at night. This is to allow the wisdom teeth to develop without ruining the patient’s beautiful smile. [drfullname]Â will see you every six to nine months to make recommendations on the wisdom teeth and an X-ray will be taken every one and a half years. Once your wisdom teeth have been evaluated and a course of action has been decided upon, wear your orthodontic retainer at least one night per week. This is because, as you get older, the muscles that surround your teeth will get tighter and place pressure on your teeth, causing them to move or crowd.Hawley Retainer

Made of clear plastic and looks like a clear aligner, such as Invisalign.
How Often Should Retainers Be Worn?
For the first year after treatment, removable retainers are typically worn full-time, except when eating or brushing. This helps your teeth stabilize in their new positions.
After the first year, most patients transition to wearing their retainers at night. Long term, wearing your retainers a few nights per week is recommended to prevent natural shifting that can occur over time.
How Do I Care for My Retainers?
Taking care of your retainers properly will help them last longer and stay effective. You should:
- Keep them away from heat, which can warp the material
- Store them in a protective case when not in use
- Clean them daily with a soft toothbrush and mild soap
- Soak them occasionally using a retainer cleaning solution
If your retainer becomes lost, damaged, or no longer fits properly, contact our office as soon as possible.
Who May Need Long-Term Retainer Wear?
Some patients are more likely to experience shifting and may need to wear their retainers more consistently. This includes those with habits like teeth grinding, tongue thrusting, or mouth breathing, as well as patients who had spacing or severely rotated teeth before treatment.
We will recommend a retention plan that fits your specific needs to help maintain your results.
Do I Still Need Regular Dental Visits?
Yes. Even after orthodontic treatment, regular dental visits are essential. Continue brushing and flossing daily and visit your dentist every six months for cleanings and checkups. This helps keep your teeth and gums healthy while maintaining your orthodontic results.
